Currently it is impossible to pin a given item in the Google Drive space, both on the home screen and in folders. A close but insufficient function is "starred". The problem is that marking with a star brings elements to a separate section, so even if we mark a specific item inside folder, it will not be highlighted on the home screen or in the folder that we marked in. While "starred" is a useful feature for isolating individual items, it basically does not allow you to pin specific documents and files within your home screen and folders. This can be a problem in case of having a lot of of documents around which we would like to single out some of them in specific area. I started designing the idea of adding a new feature because I missed it while working on a larger number of documents and my brief regularly disappeared among the other elements - current available "starred" option does not meet my needs.
This is conceptual and non-commercial project.
Currently in the main Google Drive screen it is possible to organize content by:
Image below shows main screen with a dropdown menu and list of elements that can be filtered within the main screen.
In addition, it is also possible to chose sorting that will show only folders, documents or files within a given section (in this case "shared with me". As there are no elements in the section other than documents, the option to mix with files is not available on the screen.
In the folders, in addition to selecting the item type, owner, last modifications and source, it is also possible to sort by last overall modification, last user modification and recently opened.
Google Drive features also allow to make specific actions on an item (this screenshot shows list of documents ). These actions include:
By using extended options you can move element to another folder or section, make a shortcut or mark with a star.
The closest thing to highlighting a given element is marking it with a star, then the element will be moved to a separate section where all the documents that we mark in this way will be found.
My rearrangement idea involves a separate section for pinned elements on the side segment, but most importantly pinned content will always be displayed at the very top of a given folder or main screen. Small and non-invasive change that improves Google Drive functionality and makes it easier to sort files that you want to stay at the top.
Choosing "Organize" and "Pin element"
Sorting with pinned elements first
Separate section with pinned elements - now all pinned items are marked appropriately with a pin symbol
